John Olshefski represents District 3 — South Huntsville.

With nearly 30 years of executive experience in service to our country and more recently with the Tennessee Valley communities and businesses, John Olshefski brings his passion for progress to the Huntsville City Council.

Hailing from Brunswick, Georgia, he attended The Citadel and then rose through the ranks in the United States Army holding numerous command and staff positions and retiring in 2008 as a full Colonel. Upon retirement, he was selected to enter into the Senior Executive Service for Army Materiel Command. He and his wife of 29 years, Sharon, made Huntsville, Alabama their permanent home.

With public service as his true calling, he is now employed with Navigator as a Business Development Executive -- a position that allows him to have the opportunity to pursue serving District 3 on the Huntsville City Council.

While serving as Garrison Commander of Redstone Arsenal, John Olshefski was known as the "Mayor of Redstone." Acting in much the same capacity as a city manager, he believed in going above and beyond and accomplished many beneficial projects for Redstone and Huntsville.

    • Managed over $250M in annual expenditures through informed and comprehensive decisions for short-term and long-range goals.

    • Created conditions for successful execution of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) -- coordinating multiple senior-level organizations, bringing 21,000+ new residents to the Tennessee Valley region, and managing over $875M in funding for construction and movement.

    • Initiated the development of "Team Redstone" to identify the collective group of Redstone Arsenal and Tennessee Valley communities and leaders responsible for developing an integrated, response to executing the BRAC initiative.

    • Planned and prioritized efforts of military, community, and congressional leaders to prepare infrastructure, transportation networks, workforce, education, health care and emergency services for BRAC influx.

    • Managed and directed the largest "Enhanced-Use Lease" project in the Army -- over $530M in construction for 3 million square feet of office, research, and academic space bringing increased services for Redstone Arsenal.

    • Implemented the "Residential Communities Initiative" for the revitalization of all Army housing on Redstone Arsenal -- a $650M project including over 400 homes, re-designed neighborhoods, updated pool facilities, and new community center.

    • Executed detailed Master Planning of Redstone Arsenal -- currently involving over $730M of on-going and planned construction, integrating the requirements of more than 140 organizations on the installation while maintaining the 2000 facilities currently in operation.

John Olshefski is passionate about service to his community. He is a member of the board of directors for several organizations -- The Schools Foundation, ARC Madison County, and the Madison County Veterans Memorial.
