  4. What is my Latitude and Longitude?      Back to Top
Generally, Huntsville's location can be defined as 34 degrees North latitude and 86 degrees West longitude.  For a more accurate description, minutes and seconds should be added.  City Hall is at 34 degrees 43 minutes 43 seconds North latitude and 86 degrees 35 minutes and 11 seconds west longitude.  Your latitude and longitude is a very specific coordinate that needs to be defined before an accurate answer can be given.  The coordinate for the flag pole in the front yard will be different than the tree in the back yard.  Latitude and longitude can be calculated for you by the GIS Staff.

  5. How can I determine the elevation of my property?      Back to Top
GIS maintains city wide topographic mapping. Both 2 foot and 5 foot contours are available.  Hard copies of the maps are available for $10.00 per square mile in the Planning Department map room and they are also available at no cost online via the Interactive Maps web page.

  6. Why does my mailing address have a different city name than where I actually live?     Back to Top
The U.S. Postal Service defines 'areas' within each county that are served by certain Post Offices.  The territory that each Post Office delivers to is not constrained by city limits.  The postal zones may cover sections of incorporated areas as well as unincorporated areas.  For example, the Owens Cross Roads Post Office delivery territory includes addresses within the city limits of Huntsville, Owens Cross Roads and many rural residents outside any city jurisdiction.  So you may live within the city limits of Huntsville and have an Owens Cross Roads mailing address.

  7. How can I tell if I live in a flood zone?      Back to Top
The City of Huntsville has detailed flood maps available to the public in several formats.  They are available for viewing and purchase in the map room of the Planning Department and they are also available at no cost online via the Interactive Maps web page

  8. What school zone am I in? What determines which school system my children will attend?   Back to Top
Designated geographic districts determine which school your children will attend .  You can view maps of the Huntsville City School districts online in PDF format (GIS Maps) or you can double click your address on the Interactive Maps web page and it will display the schools for which the address is zoned.  If you live within the city limits of Huntsville, your children will attend Huntsville City Schools.  If you live in the county, then your children will attend county schools.

  9. What City Council District am I in?     Back to Top
You can determine what City Council District you are in by viewing the City Council Districts map online in PDF format (GIS Maps) or by clicking on your address on the Interactive Maps web page.  Clicking the address in the Interactive Mapping will display the City Council district and the elected City Councilperson for the district.

  10. Why aren't parcels available on the Interactive Maps web page?      Back to Top
Parcel data is kept and maintained by the Madison County Tax Assessor's Office.  The data is simply not ours to post.

  11. Do you have aerial photography?      Back to Top
