Construction Under Way on $2 Million North Public Safety Complex

City of Huntsville October 9, 2013
(Huntsville, AL) - The City of Huntsville held a ceremonial groundbreaking today for its new $2 million North Public Safety Complex on North Memorial Parkway at Alabama A & M University. The new 12,500 square foot facility is being constructed next to Fire Station No. 8.

"This project has long been a vision of the Huntsville Police Department, and its reality is the work of Team Huntsville," said Police Chief Lewis Morris. "None of this would have happened without the political will and support of Mayor Tommy Battle and our City Councilmembers."

The North Public Safety Complex is being constructed on a 2.8 acre site owned by Alabama A & M University. About 100 officers, investigators and staff will be stationed in the complex, tasked with the responsibility of covering 47 square miles, including two universities and five schools.

"This beautiful facility will be an asset to the community, but it is also another great example of our partnership with Alabama A & M," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "We first partnered with A & M for our high school football teams to play in the university's incredible stadium, and now we are partnering to provide North Huntsville with a facility and resources to support public safety."

The complex will be utilized 24-7, and will have offices and a meeting room for Community Watch and citizens' public safety activities. A & M University President Dr. Andrew Hugine says both the City and his school have similar missions.

"We are here to provide services for our citizens, and it is exciting when we can partner in shared services that further both our goals," said Dr. Hugine. "We look forward to having Huntsville Police as our new neighbors."

The North Public Safety Complex will replace the existing leased facility on Mastin Lake Drive. Construction is expected to be completed in about one year.

The project team includes architect William Boehme & Associates, contractor Consolidated Construction, civil engineer Mullins, LLC, structural engineer Hodnett Hurst Engineers, and landscape architect Bostick Landscape Architects.
