|Huntsville Fire Department Earns Top Insurance Rating
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 24, 2016
(Huntsville, AL) - The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) awarded the Huntsville Fire & Rescue Department its best possible rating for its ability to stop fire loss in the community. Huntsville Fire & Rescue earned a "1" out of 10, with "1" being the top classification. Less than one percent of fire departments across the nation have earned this distinction, and it is a point of pride for the fire officers and for the City.
"I am extremely proud of Chief Mac McFarlen and his department for working at the highest level to protect our businesses and residents in the event of fire," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "So few fire operations score a Class 1, and for a city this size, with 214 square miles to cover, it speaks volumes as to the quality of our fire operations."
Chief McFarlen says he has been working on improving Huntsville's classification since he was appointed three years ago. "I appreciate all of the hard work by our Fire Department personnel to make this happen and to Mayor Battle for all of his support in making certain we have the equipment we need to benefit businesses and residents. This rating tells the story that we are capable and committed to providing the best fire protection in the nation to our community."
The ISO score is based on numerous factors including fire training, testing, drills, and the quality of a city's water system. Many insurance companies use the ISO rating to determine the premiums on fire loss. The higher the rating, the lower the premiums citizens and businesses pay for coverage. This is the first time in Huntsville's history that the City's Fire Department has earned a rating higher than three.
Huntsville Fire & Rescue operates 19 fire stations supported by 369 certified officers.
