Michelle Gilliam Jordan Named Director of Planning for City of Huntsville

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 4, 2014
(Huntsville, AL) - Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle announced today the appointment of Michelle Gilliam Jordan as the City's new Director of Planning. Jordan has been with the City of Huntsville since 2009, having served in key administrative roles as the Director of Economic Development and Legislative Affairs and as the Director of Community Development.

"Michelle's depth of experience in planning and her leadership role in economic development make her uniquely qualified for this position," said Mayor Battle. "Many of her current duties in business recruitment and retention are directly aligned with the work that occurs in our planning division."

As Director of Planning Jordan will continue to work closely with Shane Davis, the City's Director of Urban Development, and she will oversee four divisions within Planning Administration as well as GIS, Long Range Planning, and Community Development.

"I am delighted to take on this new challenge at a time when Huntsville is focused on master planning and strong economic growth," said Jordan. "The City has an outstanding planning staff, and I look forward to working with our team, learning from them, and partnering with the citizens in our community."

City of HuntsvilleA native of Detroit, Mich., Jordan earned her Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree at Alabama A & M in 1992. Prior to joining the City of Huntsville, Jordan served for 10 years as the Director of Planning and Development in Decatur, a position that earned her accolades and awards. She also worked for the City of Madison as a planner and capital improvements program manager. Through these positions and her work in Huntsville, Jordan has also gained extensive experience with HUD and government agencies, grant management, and environmental and transportation regulations.

Jordan replaces Marie Bostick, who retired from the City of Huntsville on Feb. 28 after nearly three decades of service.
