(Huntsville, AL) - The City of Huntsville reopened a half-mile section of Old Madison Pike near Cummings Research Park today after completing $5.2 million in road improvements from Jan Davis Drive to Slaughter Road.
The 18-month City of Huntsville project included a four-lane expansion, new bridge, sidewalks, wider lanes to accommodate bicycles and a new greenway parking area.
"This stretch of Old Madison Pike is a key connector for thousands of daily commuters to access our research park, Redstone Arsenal and Bridge Street," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "The road has been greatly improved for safety, volume of traffic and to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists."
Funding for the project consisted of approximately $3 million in federal dollars, $380,000 from ALDOT, and $1.8 million from the City of Huntsville.
Reed Contracting began work on Old Madison Pike in March 2014 and expected to complete the project in November 2015.
"We appreciate all of our partners who helped us finish on budget and ahead of schedule, and to our citizens, CRP, and the businesses and churches who were inconvenienced during the construction," said Kathy Martin, Director of Engineering for the City of Huntsville. "We believe the new road is well worth the effort."
To further celebrate the reopening of Old Madison Pike, City Engineers and ALDOT held a walking event on the road for the Mayor's 100-Mile Walking Challenge just prior to the ribbon cutting.
