|Sunshades and Picnic Tables Enhance Downtown Dog Park

(Huntsville, AL) - The City of Huntsville's Downtown dog park on Cleveland Avenue has some new perks - for the pet owners. While the dogs are enjoying an outdoor romp around the park, pet parents may enjoy sitting on new picnic tables screened by new sun shades.
"This was one of the most requested amenities by our dog park patrons," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "We heard the plea and our Parks & Recreation department made arrangements to have these shade centers installed."
The dog park is located near the I-565 overpass, and highway regulations don't allow permanent structures in its right of way. The City worked closely with the State Department of Transportation and found a compromise that met federal guidelines and accommodated the needs of pet owners.
"It's not a permanent pavilion, but it serves the same purpose," said Steve Ivey, Recreation Services Manager. "The downtown dog park is extremely popular with our residents, and we expect to see even more use as more apartments are being built in the area."
Parks & Recreation also installed a sunshade and picnic table at the adjacent skate park. The total cost was about $15,000.
