(Huntsville, AL) – The City of Huntsville Fire and Rescue Department held a grand opening and ribbon cutting today for its new $2.1 million Fire Station No. 6, located at 2810 Drake Avenue. The station replaces the previous facility off of Airport Road.
“We have taken a 50 year old fire station and re-centered it in this district so that we can perform better service in a more cost effective manner,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “I thank our General Services department for bringing this project in on time and under budget, and I thank our fire department for the outstanding work they do every day.”
Huntsville Fire and Rescue Chief Howard McFarlen said the district served by Fire Station 6 is growing. “This station already manages thousands of calls each year, and we want to be fully prepared to meet the demands of our community, both in terms of preventative education and in emergency calls,” said Chief McFarlen. “We are grateful to the Mayor, Councilmembers, and our fire fighters for supporting this new facility and for their ongoing commitment to public safety.”
Fire Station No. 6 houses nine emergency response personnel, per shift, to staff Engine Company 6, Ladder Company 6, and a Rescue 6. Located on a 2.1 acre lot at the entrance to the Huntsville City School’s Center for Technology on Drake Avenue, the 7,626 square foot, single story building includes three apparatus bays and living quarters.
