Huntsville Partners with Google Transit
First city in Alabama to connect with web-based transit information system

City of Huntsville Looking for fast and quick information about Huntsville's transportation options? Look no further than Google, thanks to a partnership between the Internet information giant and the City of Huntsville.

Starting today, if you want to know where to catch a bus in the city, simply point your browser or mobile device to Google Maps at maps.google.com. Enter your start and end destination and click "By public transit" to see the returned Google Maps results which will provide transit information on the most direct route, time of departure and arrival, how much the ride will cost, and even stop-by-stop directions using the Transit Navigation (beta) feature for Android users.

"This is a high-tech town and it deserves high-tech solutions to the everyday needs of its community," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "We are the first city in Alabama to partner with Google Transit, and I am proud that we can offer this service, free of charge, to our residents.

Transportation Director Tommy Brown is hopeful that the new feature will attract new users to the system. "We hope young professionals, students, and other web-savvy folks will check out our bus options and give us a try," said Brown.

Google Transit offers more than just bus times and locations. It will give the user alternate walking routes, locations of bus shelters, and even pinpoint the location of restaurants, coffee shops and retail stores along the way. To Mayor Battle, providing bus shelters, along with improved routes and information, was an important goal of his administration.

"One of my campaign promises was to provide bus shelters at the most prominent stops in the city, and I am proud to say that we have now 74 shelters that are keeping residents out of inclement weather during their daily commutes," said Battle.

In addition to the shelters, the City has retained a transportation consultant to assess the bus routes, loads and needs of passengers. The report, due in December, will make improvement recommendations to the Transportation Department.
