Mayor’s Book Club
Mayor Battle’s Book Club is committed to improving literacy by supporting reading in a child’s early years. Each year, the Book Club raises money from generous community sponsors to purchase books at a reduced cost for elementary students in the City’s Title I schools to take home and read.
The ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books per child. However, the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is only 1 book per 300 children. By providing children with books they can take home and keep at a critical stage of their academic development, Mayor Battle’s Book Club is targeting the only variable that correlates significantly with reading scores – the number of books in the home.
The Mayor’s Book Club works in partnership with the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library and Huntsville City Schools. Since it began in 2010, Mayor Battle has distributed more than 90,000 books to elementary age students. The current focus is on children in the City’s Title I Head Start, Pre-K, and Kindergarten grade levels.
