The public is invited to attend a dedication and unveiling of four bronze statues on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at William Hooper Councill Memorial Park. The ceremony represents the final phase in a master plan to recognize the legacy of Huntsville’s first school for African-American students. The park, which opened in December 2020, is a tribute and memorial to Councill School.
The statues were commissioned by the City of Huntsville and represent the hundreds of African-American students who attended the school from 1867 until its closure in the 1960s era of desegregation.
