City Workforce Training and Development
WORKFORCE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
The Human Resources Department offers a variety of training topics to its employees with the goal of providing educational tools that will enrich employees’ skills and knowledge and lead to a more productive and responsive workforce. Following are the current topics offered:
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)
Participants learn who is eligible to take FMLA leave, employee responsibilities for notifying the employer, and what type of medical certification is required from an employee.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
Participants learn how the Act prohibits discrimination against qualified disabled individuals in all employment practices including job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation, and training.
Sexual Harassment
Participants learn their responsibility as a worker, supervisor, or manager in controlling and/or preventing sexual harassment in the workplace. In addition, participants will learn what measures they can take to avoid tangible employment action and hostile work environment harassment in their work areas and/or groups. The City of Huntsville’s Harassment Policy will be reviewed and participants will learn how to respond in a timely and appropriate manner to complaints or incidences of harassment in the workplace.
Workers’ Compensation
Participants are trained regarding the City of Huntsville’s one-the-job injury procedures and how they comply with state workers’ compensation law. Supervisors and employees will understand their roles in responding to and receiving treatment for employees’ on-the-job injuries and filing the appropriate documentation.
Disciplinary Policy
Supervisors are trained how to correct deficient performance, conduct, or attitude; how to avoid conflict with personnel policies and procedures; and, how to distinguish the types of disciplinary action and the appropriate steps and documentation needed for each.
Employee Grievances
Participants learn how to differentiate and define acceptable and unacceptable reasons for filing a grievance; and, the proper procedure for filing a grievance.
Managing and Minimizing Absenteeism
Participants are trained how to use documentation to manage attendance problems and how to apply the policy consistently and document absences.
Drug and Alcohol Policy
Participants are taught the methods of testing used, reasons for testing, substances for which the City of Huntsville tests, and types of testing.
Motivating Employees
Participants learn how to use positive reinforcement to energize and motivate employees to perform at their optimum level.
