#GoPlayHsv – Parks & Recreation Month
In celebration of National Parks & Recreation Month, the City of Huntsville has launched a new campaign – #GoPlayHsv. To keep things simple, we’ve compiled all the information you need to know about the month-long celebration, how to participate, special updates and why we’re celebrating in the first place.
Whether you are a mom interested in activities for the kids, a recent graduate looking for more outdoor exercise options or a retiree wanting to meet new people, you can find what you need from the City’s parks and recreation offerings.
Play in our parks. Get your play on by joining an athletic league. Prepare yourself for play by using your neighborhood rec center’s exercise equipment or taking part in a Yoga class. Whatever your play preference is, we have on request: Go play, Huntsville.
Are you up for the challenge? Mayor Battle has proclaimed July 2017 Parks & Recreation month in the Rocket City, and we’re celebrating by challenging Huntsville residents and visitors to take advantage of the City’s parks and recreation offerings every day in July.
View the challenge checklist online or print it out to carry with you as you complete the challenge.
For every new day, there is a new challenge. Whether it’s taking a selfie at Concerts in the Park in Big Spring Park West or playing canasta at Brahan Spring Recreation Center, a challenge awaits for everyone.
How to participate
Snap a photo, shoot a video and post on your social media platform of choice using the hashtag #GoPlayHsv. Each week, Mountain High Outfitters will select a winner to receive a special prize.
Make sure to follow the City of Huntsville’s Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Huntsville on the following social channels to stay updated on the month-long campaign.
*The Parks & Recreation Department does not have a Twitter account, so the City of Huntsville’s Twitter will be jumping in on the conversation on this platform.
In addition to the challenge, there are dozens of events happening at Huntsville’s parks, greenways, and recreation centers each day, year round.

Why it matters
Ever heard the phrase “work hard, play hard?” Of course, you have. Countless studies have proven the mental and physical health benefits of enjoying nature and taking part in exercise activities, whether they be a run on a greenway, walk in a park or a game of pick-up basketball. It just feels good.
Parks, greenways, athletic leagues and recreation centers are a big part of what people refer to as the ‘quality of life’ of a place, and we think Huntsville has a lot to be proud of in this area. With 60 + parks, 12 recreation centers, 9 athletic leagues, 2 aquatics facilities, 3 splash pads and 4 dog parks, the Rocket City has much to offer its residents and visitors.
The goal of the #GoPlayHsv campaign is to make sure you – and the rest of Huntsville – know about these offerings. We want to empower you with all of the information you need to enjoy the City’s parks and recreation amenities.
When you are out exploring this month, we know you’re going to have some suggestions on how to make a great thing even better. So when you have an idea for our Parks & Recreation Department, consider submitting on the City’s idea platform – ImagineHuntsville.com.
These organizations and individuals have accepted the challenge and will be documenting their progress on their social media channels.
Follow along to see how they’re doing!
