Monte Sano Elementary School

From a small self-contained 1800s rural community Monte Sano ballooned with the Space Age. By 1958 there were approximately 100 families connected with the Space Program living on Monte Sano. Many were von Braun Rocket Team Members.

The school was founded in September, 1959. Constructed as a flat-roofed building with six rooms, kitchen and office. Gable-roofed in 1989. The school became the central core of education and community life.

A prime example of Modern/ Usonian architecture

Listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. January 19, 1999.
