The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) will join community leaders, law enforcement partners and members of HPD Agent Billy Clardy III’s family for a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 1:30 p.m., honoring the designation of the Agent Billy Clardy III Memorial Mile on U.S. 72 east.
On Dec. 6, 2019, Agent Clardy was killed in the line of duty while investigating a large-scale drug trafficking operation.
In February 2024, the Alabama Legislature unanimously passed a resolution naming a portion of U.S. 72 East in memory of Agent Billy Clardy III. Memorial markers have since been installed on both the eastbound and westbound sides of U.S. 72 near the Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve.
