The City of Huntsville will host a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7 to open the newly expanded championship soccer facility at John Hunt Park, 2151 Airport Road. With the addition of two new artificial turf fields, the City will dedicate the complex in recognition of its founder, former Mayor Loretta P. Spencer.
“We are honored to name this world-class facility after the person who made it possible,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “The Honorable Loretta Spencer was instrumental in landing the first high school state championship soccer tournament in Huntsville in 2001, and she moved mountains to get this facility built. With this recent expansion, it will forever be known as the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex.”

The City recently constructed two new synthetic turf fields at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex. The expansion included two plaza areas with shade and picnic facilities, NCAA-approved lighting, digital scoreboards, sound systems and a second locker room/press facility. The four-field, championship-caliber facility will be used for all multipurpose field sports – soccer, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and more.
The grand-opening and dedication comes just in time for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 23rd soccer tournament at John Hunt Park on May 8-12.
