Parks & Recreation Department
The goal of the Department of Parks & Recreation is to provide opportunities for recreation to all citizens regardless of family structure, income, gender or ethnic origin. This commitment involves the opportunity to achieve full recreational experiences through individual, team and family activities.
The City of Huntsville Parks & Recreation Department provides leisure time activities through a zone-based services concept. The City is divided geographically into four zones, each providing activities through recreation centers, parks and youth athletic leagues located within the zones.
The City of Huntsville also provides quality recreation facilities designed to encourage tourism and increase revenue through tennis, golf and aquatic programs, as well as through the operation of several disc golf courses, Hays Nature Preserve, Metro Kiwanis SportsPlex, Merrimack Soccer Complex, Splash Pad, Lydia Gold Skatepark and the City of Huntsville Dog Spot.
In our efforts to provide recreational opportunities to all citizens of Huntsville, the Department offers a Special Populations program for the physically and mentally challenged from preschool through senior citizens. This program originates in the Max Luther Community Center.
Finally, the department is committed to provide wholesome family entertainment in a noncompetitive atmosphere for leisure time enjoyment, in addition to striving to offer a continual program of citywide events.
