North Huntsville Greenway Project

The North Huntsville Greenway, along Pinhook Creek, is a transformative project designed to connect downtown Huntsville to Alabama A&M University and to spark recreation, redevelopment and reinvestment in the neighborhoods along its path.

A planning team led by Atlanta-based Lord Aeck Sargent is drawing inspiration from the Atlanta BeltLine to create a connection between the downtown Pedestrian Access Redevelopment Corridor (PARC) and the Meek Greenway in North Huntsville.

What is the BeltLine?

The BeltLine is one of the most transformative projects in the United States and has reshaped Atlanta living. Click on the images below to see how the multimodal pathway serves as a transportation corridor and integrates with pedestrians, businesses and residents.

Existing Conditions

The City of Huntsville worked with the planning consultant to analyze the route from AAMU to Downtown. This was an important step toward identifying a specific path or paths that the greenway could take, and which neighborhoods it might touch.

Precedents

Drawing from the BeltLine precedent, the project could include new pedestrian bridges, street crossings, public parks, community resources, and public art.

Analysis

The proposed route would wind its way along creeks, abandoned rail lines, and existing paths. Every section needed to be analyzed for context and physical constraints.

Concepts

In July and August or 2025, the City and the Consulting Team led two public workshops, including a Town Hall hosted by Councilmember Watkins. These events were held to provide residents of Huntsville with opportunities to see how different parts of the greenway might be redeveloped. They included site concepts, new parks and proposed trail improvements.

The City received a tremendous amount of input from those two meetings, and the Consulting Team is reviewing and incorporating the comments. Look for the next public engagement opportunities later in 2025.
