On April 30, 2019 at 2pm, Mayor Tommy Battle will kick-off the 2019 #ThisPlaceMattersHsv campaign by declaring the month of May as Huntsville Preservation Month.  Throughout May, the city will celebrate the “People of Preservation” to recognize the efforts of those who work to preserve Huntsville’s historic structures and heritage.

The news conference will take place at the sunken sidewalk located on the east side of the courthouse square in downtown Huntsville.  The Huntsville Madison County Historical Society (HMCHS) coordinated the renewal of the mid-1800s brick walkway as a Bicentennial project, in partnership with the Historic Huntsville Foundation (HHF).

The first floor of the former Madison County Law Library will be open for viewing.  The owners, attorneys Mitch Howie and nephew Mitchell J. Howie, purchased the early 1900s building in 2017 and plan to maintain the historical integrity of the building while updating it for modern use.

The efforts of the HMCHS, HHF, Mitch Howie and Mitchell J. Howie embody this year’s “People of Preservation” campaign theme.   Their work has breathed new life into these historic sites and structures, preserving them for generations to come.

This event is open to the public.
