URBAN FORESTRY & HORTICULTURE

This division manages the public trees within the city as well as installing landscape plantings on public properties. Work involves taking a project from design through the installation phase and into the routine maintenance of the planting. Quite a number of seasonal plantings are changed out and managed annually by the Forestry/Horticulture staff along with managing two contract aerial tree crews.

The division administers the city’s tree ordinance and guides the Tree Commission in its activities. Public education on the selection, planting and care of trees can be requested from this division. The division regularly cooperates with Huntsville Utilities in programs such as the replacement of street trees removed for power line clearance.

BEAUTIFICATION BOARD & TREE COMMISSION

The Beautification Board plans and conducts programs to recognize homeowners or businesses that have shown significant initiative in beautifying their properties. They conduct the City of Huntsville
Beautification Award program annually in June with the award ceremony in July each year.

The board also reports eyesores throughout the city to appropriate city departments and assists the city’s Green Team with various community programs.

The Tree Commission, with the assistance of the forestry horticulture supervisor, identifies public tree needs, including, but not limited to, maintenance, removals, planting, replacement and public education, and purchases or contracts for needed products and services within the city’s normal fiscal limitations.
