General Services Department
The General Services Department is made up of several divisions in different locations throughout the City. They handle new construction, additions, and alterations in the Facilities Projects office. The Fleet Services Division handles the fleet purchases, maintenance, and repairs of the City’s Fleet. Another division of the General Services office is that of Janitorial. The General Services Maintenance Division handles all maintenance of City structures and properties.
FACILITIES PROJECTS
The General Services Facilities Projects office manages new construction, alterations, and additions on City Facilities. The Facilities Projects office is staffed with architects, estimators, construction managers, and office managers. The Facilities Projects office works closely with other City Departments and the public to facilitate construction projects. The Facilities Projects Office is involved in the design process, estimating process, value engineering, construction documents, contracts, project management, and much more.
FLEET MANAGEMENT
The goal of the Fleet Management Division is to provide City of Huntsville Departments with properly equipped and well maintained vehicles and equipment to aid them in performing their job task.
Staffed by 30 – 35 employees, responsibilities of the Fleet Management Division include the purchase of new vehicles and mowing equipment, fueling services of vehicles and equipment, and the repair and maintenance of all types of equipment ranging from Automated Garbage Trucks to Emergency Response Vehicles to Mowing Equipment.
FACILITIES MAINTENANCE
The General Services Facilities Maintenance Division provides maintenance for over 200 City Buildings/Structures throughout the City of Huntsville. Our responsibilities include all facets of facility maintenance/management including HVAC, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical/Access Controls, Janitorial, Metal Fabrication, and other general building or structure repairs and maintenance.
In addition, maintenance is performed on both athletic and passive parks to include lighting, fencing, back stops, dugouts, playground equipment, picnic tables, etc. In-house personnel respond to the daily operational needs of the buildings and perform preventive maintenance on all major building systems.
Some major repair and facility upgrade work may be accomplished utilizing service contracts with outside vendors. General Services strives to make City facilities safe and attractive for local residents and visitors in the Huntsville area. This enhances the pride of the local citizens in our community and reflects the nature and character of the community to visitors.
The office staff handles day to day operations from work orders to invoices. All property insurance is processed through the General Services office staff. Utilities for City facilities and parks are the responsibility of the General Services Office staff.
JANITORIAL
The General Services Janitorial Division provides janitorial services for over 40 City facilities located throughout the City of Huntsville. The Janitorial Division also provides janitorial services to City parks and at special events throughout the year. The janitorial staff is comprised of 25 – 30 employees, both full time and part time. Janitorial supplies and equipment are purchased by the Janitorial staff utilizing City contracts. Some facility janitorial services are contracted out, utilizing current City bids. The Custodial and Security Supervisor also provides security at some City facilities and for various special events.
