ALDOT: Expect delays on South Memorial Parkway (U.S. 231/Alabama 53) northbound and southbound
Published on July 31, 2018
The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists to expect delays on South Memorial Parkway (U.S. 231/Alabama 53) northbound and southbound between Golf Road and Whitesburg Drive as contractors work to open the mainline to traffic Tuesday, July 31.
Preparation for opening the new portion of mainline, which includes overpasses at Byrd Spring Road and Logan Drive/Lily Flagg Road, will begin about 8 a.m. with the closure of the mainline under the Martin Road bridge. As of 8 a.m., all southbound mainline traffic will be required to exit to the southbound service road north of Martin Road. As of about 9 a.m., all northbound service road traffic will be restricted from entering the mainline south of Martin Road. Motorists are advised to expect brief stoppages and single-lane closures in each direction throughout the morning.
Please drive with caution and obey the directions of any flaggers on site.
Dry conditions are necessary for some of the work to be performed, so the mainline will only be opened if weather permits. Inclement weather could delay the opening until later in the week. A ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for 10 a.m. will proceed even if the opening is delayed.
