SUMMARY

Originally called the Harvard Gateway, this road was designed to serve as a new gateway into downtown from Governor’s Drive to Williams Avenue at Big Spring Park. The 2000 linear foot roadway was constructed in two phases. It was renamed the Dr. Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard in honor of the civil rights leader who was born in Huntsville and attended the nearby William Hooper Councill High School.


STATUS

The final phase of Lowery Boulevard from Pelham Avenue to Williams Avenue was opened on June 4, 2018, along with the redesigned segment of Lowe Avenue from Gallatin Street to Lowery Boulevard. The road project is complete and open to traffic.

COST & FUNDING

$7M for the entire project between Governors Drive and Williams Avenue.
The contractor is Wiregrass Construction.
