More than 150 years after the school first opened its doors, and more than 50 years since the school closed, the historic site of Huntsville’s first public school for African-American students, Dr. William Hooper Councill High, has been thoughtfully transformed into a beautiful park. Architects worked with the WHCHS Alumni Association to create spaces that fit the footprint of the school classrooms, gym, and cafeteria.
