Delay of Tax Payments – COVID-19

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the City of Huntsville (COH) has authorized a tax payment extension for March 2020 and April 2020 Sales and Lodgings tax until June 1, 2020 for qualifying businesses.

ELIGIBILITY

To qualify for the tax payment extension, businesses must have a current City of Huntsville privilege license to operate one or more of the following:

  • Restaurant – COH Schedule 74 (ADOR Sector 72)
  • Hotel/Motel – COH Schedule 47 (All remitters of Lodging Taxes)
  • Small Retail Business – COH Schedule 56 (With average monthly sales of $62,500 or less during 2019)

FAQs

  1. Do I have to file my March and April tax returns on time?   Yes, March and April tax returns must be filed on time.
  2. Is interest waived?   No, interest will not be waived.
  3. Does the payment extension apply to my Liquor Tax Return/Payment?  No, the payment extension does not apply to Liquor Tax Return/Payment.
  4. If I can’t pay the balance due by June 1, 2020, is there a penalty due?  Yes, a failure to pay penalty of 10% will be added to the balance due after June 1.
  5. Does the payment extension apply to all city taxes?  No, the extension only applies to Sales and Lodging Tax.
  6. How do I file on time without payment? A paper return must be filed directly with the city tax office.
