Hook, line and summer fun awaits at the Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo

Cast a line and join the fun. The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo returns Saturday, June 6, from 7-10 a.m., with plenty of chances to land a great catch.
Held at Brahan Spring Park Lagoon, 3771 SW Ivy Ave., the fishing rodeo is a popular event for young anglers ages 6-12.
Thanks to generous support from Buster’s Bait and Tackle and community partners, the lagoon will be stocked with more than 700 pounds of catfish, including 19 tagged fish worth $100 each and one specially tagged fish worth $1,000.
“The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo is a valued community tradition and it’s one we are proud to host each year,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “The event is a great opportunity for kids to get outdoors, enjoy time with family and experience the classic fun of fishing.”
Fishing begins at 7 a.m. Participants can register online or on site. To claim a tagged fish, anglers must be registered and checked in. Fishing ends at 10 a.m., and awards follow at 10:30 a.m.
While children can receive assistance with baiting their lines and handling their catch, they must independently hook and reel in their fish. Participants are encouraged to bring chairs, fishing equipment and bait to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all.
Looking for some practice before the big day? Brahan Spring Recreation Center offers a Get Fishing Rodeo Ready program for ages 6-12 from 9-10 a.m. on Saturdays May 16, 23 and 30. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gear. Spots are limited and registration is required.
