Temporary California Street Closure – Saturday, September 12

Published on September 11, 2020

Weather permitting, Saturday, September 12, workers will begin removing a large tree on California Street across from Harrison Avenue. The process is expected to take several hours.

City of Huntsville Arborist Marc Byers said a major shaft on the tree failed several weeks ago, exposing previously hidden structural defects.

“Unfortunately, the only way to address these hazards and protect traffic and surrounding property is to close the street and use a crane to remove the tree,” he said.

The City will close California Street at McClung Avenue and Lowe/Fraser Avenue to through-traffic at 7 a.m. Saturday until the work is complete. Northbound drivers will take a right on Fraser, a left on Colorado Street, and then a left on McClung back to California. Southbound traffic will take a right on McClung, follow through straight to Williams Avenue, take a left on Madison Street, and then left on Lowe to California.

Heavy trucks will need to detour around the area using Pratt Avenue, Memorial Parkway, and Governors Drive. See map below. For questions, please contact Marc Byers at Marc.Byers@HuntsvilleAL.gov.
