File a Police Report
The Huntsville Police Department provides several ways for residents to file a police report.
If you are experiencing an emergency and require an officer immediately, call 911.
If you need to file a report for documentation or insurance purposes, call 256-722-7100 to speak with a police communications representative.
How to File a Report
After contacting the police department, a report may be completed in one of two ways.
- Officer Responds to Your Location
An officer will respond to your location if:
- The suspect is known
- Evidence such as fingerprints or identifying marks may be present
- The incident involves serious physical injury
- The crime involves sexual assault
An officer may respond to your location or a medical facility to complete the report.
- Report Completed by Telephone
If there is no evidence at the scene and the report is primarily for documentation, an officer may complete your report by phone.

This option is often used for incidents such as:
- Minor theft
- Gasoline theft
- Documentation for insurance purposes

Accident Reports
If you need a copy of a traffic accident report and cannot visit the department in person, you may request one by mail.
Send a money order or certified check for $10.50, along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope and the order form provided by the investigating officer.
