RECORDS DIVISION

The Records Division of the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is responsible for managing and producing police records and documentation in accordance with legal reporting requirements outlined in the Alabama Criminal Code (Title 13A). These records support criminal justice processes and public transparency.

The division operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is open to the public during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The division maintains all traffic accident reports and criminal case reports.

Employment-related background checks may be requested through the Huntsville Police Department’s Identification (ID) Department, which is housed within the Records Division.

Requests must be made in person at 815 Wheeler Avenue during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The cost ranges from $5 to $10. Accepted forms of payment include cash, credit card or check, payable to the City of Huntsville. A valid government-issued photo ID is required at the time of the request.

Effective Oct. 1, 2018, civilian requests for crime statistics (such as inquiries related to relocating to a specific area or researching crime data for a particular neighborhood or property) must be directed to the Community Relations Officer in the appropriate police precinct.

All other requests for crime statistics, including those from businesses, other law enforcement agencies and government entities, should be directed to the Huntsville Police Department’s Public Affairs Division.

Criminal case report copies may be purchased from the Records Division, located at 815 Wheeler Avenue, during business hours (Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

You must be the listed victim or reporting party on the report to obtain a copy and will need to provide the following information when you request your copy:

1) Valid ID

2) Case report number

3) Date and location of the incident

4) Reason for obtaining the report

*If you are listed as anything other than the victim or reporting party on a report you must have the record subpoenaed to obtain a full copy of the report.

The cost is $10, cash, credit card or check only, payable to the City of Huntsville.

Fingerprinting services are available through the Huntsville Police Department’s Identification (ID) Department, which is located within the Records Division. These services are provided only for a limited list of approved agencies and purposes (see list below).

Please review the list carefully to confirm that fingerprinting is available for your specific agency or reason. Calling ahead is strongly recommended to ensure availability and reduce wait times.

The cost is $10 per fingerprint card, unless otherwise noted below.

The MCSO Annex prints Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $10 per card, and the requesting individual must provide the card(s).

The wrecker service currently contracted by the Huntsville Police Department to provide vehicle towing and impound services is Roadside Towing.

For inmate information or to contact the jail, please call 256-519-4800. This number reaches the Madison County Jail.

The Madison County Jail is operated by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, which is responsible for processing all inmates within Madison County, including those arrested within the City of Huntsville.
