Health and Wellness
The City of Huntsville is committed to providing employees the resources to maintain their health and the ability to achieve personal well-being.
To promote healthy lifestyles, all City of Huntsville employees, covered retirees and covered dependents age three and above are eligible for services at the City’s Health & Wellness Center. The Center, administered by Premise Health, is more than just a clinic. The Center provides cost-effective health care and on-line services at no cost to the individual. Open Monday through Saturday, the Center provides medical services including acute, primary, and preventive care, as well as annual physicals. The Center offers routine blood work, immunizations, wellness coaching, chronic disease management, many generic medications dispensed on-site, and much more.
COMPREHENSIVE WELLNESS PROGRAM
The City of Huntsville is dedicated to the promotion of healthy lifestyles for active and retired City employees and their families through the development of health sponsored activities at the workplace.
A Comprehensive Wellness Program has been adopted with the following goals and objectives:
- Improve the well being of all active and retired employees
- Identify major health risks
- Offer health screenings and wellness fairs
- Promote healthy lifestyle changes
- Increase productivity and reduce absenteeism
- Improve occupational safety
- Lower healthcare costs
- Ensure patient confidentiality
- Encourage proper nutrition and exercise
- Periodically evaluate the program’s results
As part of our Comprehensive Wellness Program, the City of Huntsville currently offers diet and nutrition classes; blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose screenings; an annual wellness fair and flu shot clinic; immunizations for employees exposed to high risk factors on the job; a physician’s clinic for non-occupational illnesses and minor injuries; a variety of wellness related training classes; and a wellness newsletter.
Some of the many targeted program offerings the City sponsors are tobacco cessation methods with group support, weight loss campaigns, lunch and learn sessions centering around wellness topics, diabetes education, and heat stress awareness classes. The Comprehensive Wellness Program adopted by the City has developed the strategy of attacking the “BIG THREE” chronic diseases/conditions in our workforce: heart disease, diabetes, obesity. Therefore, the targeted program offerings throughout the year will focus on educating, supporting, and providing resources for employees and their families to make lifestyle choices that reduce their risk of the “BIG THREE.”
As a component of the City’s Comprehensive Wellness Program, a wellness committee (made up of City employees throughout the various departments) provides representation in the planning and implementation stages and assists in educating the employee population about wellness topics.
