January 2021 – Development Review

New industrial projects and a redevelopment of Haysland Square in South Huntsville topped the list of non-residential permits issued in January. Residential units permitted nearly doubled, and CO’s more than tripled year-over-year.


Residential Permits (new construction) in Huntsville city limits:

In January, 245 housing units were permitted, 147 single- and 98 multi-family. The top tract for building permits last month was 14.03 (Research Park West) where 98 units were permitted, all multi-family. This is an 89.9% increase over January 2020, when 129 housing units (all single-family) were permitted.

Residential Certificates of Occupancy (new construction) in Huntsville city limits:

263 housing units were granted certificates of occupancy (CO’s), 96 single- and 167 multi-family. The top tract for CO’s in the month of January was 106.12 (72 West) where 66 housing units were added, 10 single- and 56 multi-family. This is a 209% increase from January 2020, when 85 housing units (82 single- and 3 multi-family) were granted CO’s.
