Get ready for ‘reel’ fun, as Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo returns to Brahan Spring Park

Published on June 3, 2022

For more than 35 years, the City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation Department has helped introduce children to the joy of fishing.

This year is no exception.

On Saturday, June 4, the Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo returns to Brahan Spring Park North Lagoon.

Whether it’s your child’s first time to fish or they’re a practiced hand at casting a line, this free event, for ages 6-12, is fun for the whole family.

With the support of Buster’s Bait and Tackle and nearly two-dozen other community partners, the lagoon will be stocked with 250 pounds of catfish. Twenty-five will be tagged with prizes.

“The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo is a great opportunity to come out, spend time with the family, watch a child catch a fish, and maybe walk away with some money or prizes,” said Brahan Spring Recreation Center Supervisor Bruce Keel. “Thanks to some terrific sponsors, we are proud to once again offer this event.”

All participants must register at Brahan Spring Park from 7-8:30 a.m. The fishing rodeo will take place from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Prizes and awards will be given out at 10:30 a.m.

While children can receive help in baiting their lines and removing their catch, they must hook and reel in the fish on their own. Participants should bring their own chairs, equipment and bait.
