The Huntsville City Council approved a resolution to form the North Alabama Public Energy District, comprised of Huntsville Utilities, the City of Athens, and the Water Works, Sewer and Gas Board of the City of Scottsboro.
A similar resolution was previously approved by the Athens and Scottsboro city councils.
The resolution passed by the Huntsville City Council appoints Huntsville Utilities President and CEO Wes Kelley to the Energy District board of directors.
The North Alabama Public Energy District is:
- A regional planning effort to evaluate infrastructure and future energy needs in North Alabama
- A formal structure to research, coordinate, and pursue funding opportunities for long-term solutions
- A proactive step to put North Alabama in control of its future infrastructure and energy needs
- An opportunity to work together across the region on shared infrastructure challenges
“Forming the district is step one, allowing us to explore what’s needed collaboratively,” Kelley said. “Infrastructure isn’t merely a local issue; it’s regional, so we need a regional approach.”
The North Alabama Public Energy District is being incorporated to investigate the construction of an additional natural gas transmission pipeline. The District also seeks to secure reliable, long-term and economical supplies of natural gas.
