City monitoring potential wintry weather, encourages residents to be prepared

Published on January 23, 2026

The City of Huntsville is continuing to monitor winter weather conditions in coordination with the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and regional partners.

Warming shelters

In addition to monitoring conditions, the City’s continuum of care partners will open warming centers on Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to assist with hospitality, meal service and general support throughout the weekend. Shifts are available from Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. to Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. Register at the volunteer link.

Winter weather briefings and updates

The City will notify local media on weather briefings and post updates to its social media channels. No weather briefings are currently schedule.

To help residents stay informed, the City has activated its winter weather communications webpage:

  • Residents are encouraged to sign up for City Alerts to receive updates by text or email
  • The Winter Weather Alerts webpage serves as a one-stop location for information during any winter weather event
  • For real-time road closures, road conditions, and public safety updates, follow the Huntsville Police Department and the City of Huntsville on X and Facebook

As a reminder, if a road is closed, it is illegal to bypass a barrier. Elevated roadways – such as overpasses on Memorial Parkway or the Interstate 565/Memorial Parkway interchange – are typically the first roads affected by winter weather.
