The City of Huntsville is pleased to announce the appointment of Gene Uhl as the new Director of Information Technology Services (ITS). A seasoned technology leader with more than 42 years of experience, Uhl brings a wealth of technical expertise, leadership and a deep commitment to public service.

Uhl has been a valued member of the City’s ITS Department for the past 17 years, serving in various capacities, including Network Engineer, Network Manager, and most recently as Interim Director. His prior roles include Systems Engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton, Director of Computing at the State University of New York, and EDP Coordinator at Sperry Government Defense Contractor.

“Gene has proven himself time and again as a knowledgeable, innovative and dedicated public servant,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “His deep understanding of the City’s infrastructure and his forward-thinking approach to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence will ensure Huntsville remains a leader in municipal technology.”

Since moving to Huntsville from Long Island, New York in 2007, Uhl has led or played a key role in several transformative initiatives, including the redesign of the City Hall IT infrastructure, development of a regional 200Gbe fiber network ring, and the launch of an advanced body-worn camera system for Huntsville Police. His work on cybersecurity defense, data center upgrades and emergency recovery systems has helped the City modernize services, protect critical data and save millions in taxpayer dollars.

“I am honored to accept the appointment as the ITS Director at the City of Huntsville,” said Uhl. “Information technology, cybersecurity, and most recently artificial intelligence have transformed not only the way we support our employees, but how we interact and serve the great people of Huntsville. I am proud of our IT team’s agility, responsiveness and commitment to meeting the ever-changing needs of departments and residents. I look forward to building on our strengths and thank you for this incredible opportunity.”

Beyond his technical work, Uhl is an active community member. He and his wife, Annette, volunteer as Heart to Heart therapy dog handlers and participate in the Read with Me program at Huntsville Learning Center. Uhl also serves as a national AYSO referee and has officiated soccer for over 17 years. Through his IT leadership role with the City, he contributes to regional IT and cybersecurity efforts through ISSA, InfraGard, Cyber Huntsville and other local councils.

The City is confident that under Gene Uhl’s leadership, the ITS Department will continue to thrive and expand its role in supporting a smarter, safer and more connected Huntsville.
