Dig Into December: What to Plant This Month

Published on November 29, 2025

December is a wonderful time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Adding garden center gift cards or a few special plants to your holiday wish list can help you create living memories that last a lifetime. Here are a few excellent choices to brighten your garden and holiday arrangements:

Southern Magnolia – A true Southern classic, this evergreen beauty reaches 60–80 feet tall and is beloved for its glossy leaves and large white summer blooms. For smaller spaces, consider the ‘Teddy Bear’ or ‘Little Gem’ varieties as they offer the same elegant charm in a more compact form.

Winterberry Holly – This deciduous shrub adds a festive touch with its clusters of red, orange, or yellow berries. Remember, you may need a male pollinator if one isn’t nearby. Perfect for sunny spots (6+ hours of light), Winterberry Holly also tolerates moist soil. For petite gardens, try ‘Red Sprite’ or ‘Mary Poppins’ cultivars.

Rosemary – A hardy perennial with fragrant, needle-like evergreen leaves and delicate blue flowers. The variety ‘Arp’ is a great choice because it’s winter-tough and drought tolerant. Snip a few sprigs to flavor your favorite holiday dishes or to add aromatic greenery to your home.

Planting a perennial can be a gift you can enjoy for years!
