The Huntsville Police Department wants everyone to have a safe July Fourth holiday and reminds you that firing, possessing or selling unpermitted fireworks on property in the City Limits is against City Ordinance >>> https://bit.ly/2RV4B79. It is also against City Ordinance to fire a gun within the City Limits >>>  https://bit.ly/30bFoZ7. Both of these offenses have increasing fines beginning at $100 and can also require jailtime. Any illegal possessed fireworks seen by officers can and will be confiscated. A felony can also be the result if a projectile from gunfire causes injury or penetrates a home, vehicle or other similar types of space. Celebratory gunfire can be a common occurrence for this holiday and we want the public to be aware of both the dangers and the penalities for doing so.

We receive many calls every July 4th Holiday to respond to the use of fireworks or the possible sounds of gun fire within the city. We encourage all citizens to continue to call us but also ask for patience as we receive many of these calls along with other routine calls. These calls will be prioritized by dispatch and officer response will be based on the severity of the call at that time.

There will be a permitted fireworks event at the Space and Rocket Center on July 4th at 9pm and citizens are encouraged to attend this event in lieu of illegally using firworks in the City limits >>> https://bit.ly/2Xla2lH. Officers will be out doing traffic control and we are encouraging carpooling to this event. Leaving the Space Center property after the event will also require patience by motorists due to the amount of traffic expected. Parking on the side of the Interstate will not be allowed. Please plan ahead for your venue of parking.

We also want the public to be aware that the Huntsville Police Department will also be looking for motorists driving under the influence through the rest of the week. Please be responsible and if you plan on drinking alcohol, have a sober designated driver planned for your transportation. If you believe you see a driver driving under the influence you can call our non-emergency number at 256-722-7100. Be prepared to give a vehicle description, travel direction and tag information when calling.
