Huntsville approves engineering contract to upgrade two fields at Merrimack Soccer Complex

Plans for renovations at Merrimack Soccer Complex, 3501 SW Triana Blvd., are moving forward following City Council approval of an engineering design contract.
A $175,000 design services contract with Ivaldi Engineering will produce a feasibility plan to evaluate upgrading Fields 1 and 2 to synthetic turf. The project would mark a third phase of field improvements at the complex, following previous renovations to Fields 11–18. The Merrimack Soccer Complex currently operates 18 lighted fields, eight of which are synthetic turf.
If designs are approved, construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2026 and conclude in early 2027. The estimated construction cost is $2.5 million.
Synthetic turf fields typically have a lifespan of about 10 years and require significantly less maintenance than natural grass. The durable, water-efficient surface allows for increased playability during wet weather and supports high traffic from both youth and adult leagues. Turf fields can also be easily configured for multiple sports, including lacrosse and ultimate frisbee.
Merrimack’s first turf fields opened in spring 2019 and were well-received by the local soccer community. The upgrades have helped attract tournaments and major matches to Huntsville, further strengthening the city’s growing sports tourism efforts.
