Mill Creek Choice Neighborhood Revitalization Launch Community-wide Celebration March 7

Published on February 27, 2020

It’s time to celebrate a major revitalization project for the City of Huntsville.

On Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend a family-friendly event to celebrate Huntsville’s selection for a $1.3 million Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This grant funds the creation of a plan to revitalize and transform a specific geographic segment of the Huntsville West community located just south of downtown.

Called the “Mill Creek Choice Neighborhood,” the community celebration event will be held in the Westside Gymnasium at 125 Earl St SW Huntsville, 35805.

“This is a family event that engages residents of our target area, in and around Butler Terrace and Butler Terrace Addition, the community-at-large, as well as our partners. There will be plenty of free food, games, music, information, giveaways, and an opportunity for us to listen to your thoughts and ideas,” said Scott Erwin, Interim Director of Community Development and Huntsville west native.

Since its formation in 1993, Choice Neighborhoods Initiative replaced the HOPE VI Program of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and is designed to help local stakeholders transform distressed neighborhoods, typically viewed as neighborhoods of last resort, into flourishing and thriving areas where people chose to live.

CNI is based on three “pillars:” people, housing and neighborhood. The Transformation Plan will include each pillar and identify community-based goals and strategies for improvement, as well as specific projects to advance the transformation process. The Planning process will last approximately 3 ½ years. Once the plan is completed Huntsville will have the opportunity to compete for a Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant.
