This summer an exciting program started at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Center’s indoor pool. With the help up the Huntsville Swim Association (HSA) and their President Curt Worshek, the Showers Pool now has a swim team for boys and girls ages 5 to 17 years old.  On September 3rd, the Showers Sea Dragons started their fall season with practice on Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m. (it’s not too late to join, though!).

Some of the children are beginner swimmers, while some have already mastered the basics and will learn the ins and outs of competitive swimming. Worshek and a coach from HSA oversee the practices, while parent and student volunteers from the Huntsville Swim Association are in the water coaching the children. There is always a certified life guard on duty at the Showers Pool.

The summer participation of the swim team far exceeded expectations, with around 35 children practicing on a weekly basis and 50 registered for the team. Curt has been involved in many sports, but he felt that starting a swim team at Showers was the best way to interact with and impact the surrounding community in a positive way.

“Swimming is the one sport that I have seen positive changes in every participant’s life, regardless of their performance,” Worshek said. “The life and safety skills that the children learn extend far beyond the pool.”

With the understanding of how important having a proper swim suit and goggles are to a swimmer, Worshek is working with Compass Life Ministries to provide every swim team member a gift card to First Place Athletics so they can purchase the proper equipment. He hopes to be able to further expand the program by getting the team competition ready for the Huntsville City Swim Meet next summer, and eventually providing transportation to the Showers Pool for children that currently do not have easy access to a community pool or swim program.
