Plan a hike – June 1 is National Trails Day
Published on May 29, 2024
Whether you are a frequent hiker or a first-timer, National Trails Day is a great time to enjoy nature and explore Huntsville’s amazing trails at Hays Nature Preserve, Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary and Land Trust of North Alabama. Held the first Saturday each June, National Trails Day is designed to encourage people to discover trails, become active on trail issues and share an excitement for the outdoors.
Green Team Manager (and hiking enthusiast) Niki Sothers offers some tips for day hiking, which start with planning. She suggests starting with information about hiking locations on the Alabama State Parks and Land Trust of North Alabama websites. Once you have your trail selected, think about what you will need for the day.
“Make sure you have at least one person accompany you because there is safety in numbers,” Sothers said. “You also need to check the weather before embarking on a hike and make sure you pack necessities, such as water, food, first aid kit, flashlight, sunscreen and insect repellant.”
Once you have your plan, Sothers keeps trail etiquette in mind. This entails the following:
- Pack it in, Pack it out. If you brought it with you, take it with you.
- Leave what you find – don’t pick those flowers please! Take only pictures.
- Make yourself known on the trail. Offer a friendly “Hello” to other hikers.
- Stay on the trail. Protect the nature around you.
- Respect wildlife by keeping your distance. See a snake, give it space.
- If trails are too wet and muddy, turn back and reschedule for your safety and to protect the trails.
- Keep noise to a minimum. Don’t disturb the animals around you.
- Hikers going uphill have the right of way.
