A Monday morning traffic stop ended with Huntsville Police arresting Dante Kilgore, 28, on charges of assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and using a false identity to obstruct justice.

Kilgore was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for traffic violations near Pulaski Pike and Stringfield Drive at about 12:15 a.m. on June 28. The vehicle pulled into a gas station, where a Huntsville Police officer made contact with its occupants and called for backup.

An altercation with Kilgore occurred as officers tried to gain compliance. The suspect broke free from officers, pulled a firearm from his waistband and pointed it directly at an officer. While the suspect had the gun pointed at one of the officers, another officer implemented a distraction strike, which caused Kilgore to drop the gun. After Kilgore was handcuffed, a second gun was found in his waistband.

“Both of the officer’s actions showed extreme restraint in what could easily have been a deadly situation,” said DeWayne McCarver, Deputy Chief of Police.

Kilgore was arrested following the incident and was transported to Huntsville Hospital to be evaluated after advising officers he had ingested illegal drugs. After being cleared at the hospital, Kilgore was booked into the Madison County Jail.
