It’s almost time to head back to school, and the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Awareness for Youth (CAFY) are making sure students start the year off right with its annual Back to School Backpack and School Supply Giveaway.
Join us Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Calhoun Community College’s Huntsville-Research Park campus, 102 Wynn Drive NW, for a celebration packed with free supplies, live entertainment, community connections and more.
This can’t-miss event will feature Toni Terrell of “Toni in the Morning” as emcee, along with DJ Prime Time 256 of WHRP, exciting performances by the Huntsville Community Drumline, Lee High School’s N’General band ensemble, Alexander Martial Arts, and appearances by special guests.
Students ages 12-18 can grab a free backpack and school supplies while they last, thanks to generous donations collected during recent Stuff the Bus drives.
Families can also connect with local youth services organizations, talk with mentors as well as explore public safety equipment and vehicles up close with Huntsville Police, Huntsville Fire & Rescue and SWAT.
“We want every child in Huntsville to feel confident and excited about the new school year,” said Dr. Randy Barbour, the City’s Multicultural Affairs Director. “This event is about more than backpacks. It’s about showing our students they’re supported by an entire community that believes in their potential. A special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Harry Hobbs for their vision and continued leadership in the community, which has helped shape this event into a meaningful annual tradition for 14 years.”
No registration is required. Bring your student and get ready for a morning of fun, learning and school-year prep. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
