Published on January 8, 2026

The transformation of the former City Hall site into a vibrant expansion of Big Spring Park East has reached a major milestone.

The City awarded a construction contract to Fite Construction Company to convert the former City Hall property at 308 Fountain Circle into an active, accessible public greenspace that enhances downtown Huntsville’s most iconic park.

Fite Construction will have 400 days to complete the park expansion for its low bid of $12,481,000, approximately $2 million under the project’s approved budget.

Mayor Tommy Battle said the contract approval represents a significant step forward in realizing the City’s long-term vision for Big Spring Park.

“This project reflects our commitment to smart growth, thoughtful design, and fiscal responsibility,” Mayor Battle said. “We are expanding one of Huntsville’s most beloved public spaces while delivering meaningful amenities for residents and visitors.”

What’s Coming to Big Spring Park East

Construction will include a range of amenities designed to encourage recreation, connectivity, and community gathering, including:

  • Pavilion with an integrated water feature
  • Public restrooms
  • Rustic-themed playground
  • Accessible walking paths throughout the site
  • Public art installations in partnership with ArtsHuntsville
  • Church Street streetscape improvements, including pedestrian enhancements
  • Repairs to the canal wall to improve long-term stability and safety

The design, developed by Bostick Landscape Architects and Nola VanPeursem, emphasizes ADA accessibility. It improves pedestrian connections and enhances the site’s overall visual appeal. Together, these elements strengthen the link between Big Spring Park East and West while creating inviting spaces for relaxation, play, and community gatherings.

Construction is expected to begin in approximately two weeks, following final contract execution and pre-construction coordination.
