America 250: The volunteer spirit behind the Greatest American Cleanup

Published on

As America prepares to celebrate its Semiquincentennial, communities across the country are stepping up through the Greatest American Cleanup—a nationwide initiative launched by Keep America Beautiful in 2023. The effort challenges cities to reduce litter, beautify neighborhoods and inspire environmental stewardship.

Huntsville embraced that challenge early. In 2023, Mayor Tommy Battle signed the Greatest American Cleanup Pledge on behalf of the City, committing Huntsville to measurable improvements and greater community engagement. Since then, the City has made meaningful progress towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Huntsville.

“Huntsville’s identity has always been rooted in innovation and community spirit,” Mayor Battle said. “City cleanup efforts help create welcoming spaces where people want to live, work, explore and put down roots.”

One highlight of the past year was National Cleanup Day, when more than 150 volunteers from neighborhoods, civic groups, businesses and partner organizations, worked together to remove litter and improve public spaces. Their efforts made a visible impact and reinforced the importance of keeping Huntsville clean and inviting.

Volunteers collecting trash along a riverGreen Team also supported the World Water Day Cleanup, focusing on protecting streams and rivers, removing trash from waterways and raising awareness about how litter affects water quality.

These efforts are part of Green Team’s year‑round work, which also includes environmental education and sustainability partnerships.

In 2025, as part of the Green Ambassador Program, nearly 8,000 students participated in hands‑on learning about recycling, water quality and litter prevention, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“Every cleanup, every classroom lesson, and every bag of litter collected makes a noticeable difference,” said Niki Sothers, Green Team Manager. “When our community comes together, the results and impact are immediate and meaningful.”

The City also has expanded street‑sweeping operations—increasing coverage from 8,314 miles in 2023 to 14,691 miles in 2025—preventing debris from reaching waterways and improving overall appearance across Huntsville. The overall mileage is expected to increase in 2026.

Together, volunteer cleanups, education efforts, street sweeping, beautification projects and sustainability initiatives are helping Huntsville fulfill the vision of the Greatest American Cleanup. Through strong partnerships and dedicated volunteers, Huntsville is building a lasting environmental legacy as the nation celebrates America’s 250th birthday this month.
