Applications now open for Civic Engagement Academy fall 2025 cohort

The Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) offers residents a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the departments and people who keep the Rocket City running, and applications for the Fall 2025 cohort are now open.

Hosted by the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, the CEA is an eight-week program designed to connect citizens with City leaders while providing insight on the day-to-day functions of municipal government. Through interactive sessions, participants gain insight into how departments collaborate to improve the quality of life across the community.

African American man speaks to large group from podium“This program pulls the curtain back and gives citizens a clear view of what each department does, how we collaborate and how we create a city that supports its residents inside and outside City Hall,” said Dr. Randy Barbour, the City’s Director of Multicultural Affairs. “It’s an incredible opportunity to learn how the City serves your community and connect with leaders and neighbors you might not otherwise meet.”

The free program begins Tuesday, Sept. 16, and continues each Tuesday evening through Nov. 4, providing hands-on learning experiences and direct access to department heads, City staff and Mayor Tommy Battle. Topics will include:

  • Sept. 16: Orientation / How Our City Operates
  • Sept. 23: Our City Growing
  • Sept. 30: Our City Safe, Secure & Responding
  • Oct. 7: Our City at Work at City Hall
  • Oct. 14: Our City Maintaining
  • Oct. 21: Our City Engaging
  • Oct. 28: Our Community Resources
  • Nov. 4: Graduation

Recent graduates say the CEA experience goes beyond education and builds connections.

African American man, African American woman and white man smiling for photo“The people who run the City are no longer just titles or offices,” said Dr. Denise Mose, a spring 2025 graduate. “They are real people who answer calls, offer support and genuinely want to make Huntsville better. I’ve learned so much about my hometown and feel more inspired than ever to get involved.”

Participants must be at least 19 years old, live in the Huntsville metro area and have a desire to become more engaged in local government and civic life. From neighborhood advocates to professionals and community volunteers, the program welcomes aspiring leaders of all backgrounds.

Lynsey Smith, Communication Specialist for the Huntsville Police Department, participated in the program in spring 2025 and says if you’re on the fence, she recommends going all in.

“I joined because I wanted to learn more about where I live and how to be a better ambassador for the City I love,” Smith said.

More than 277 residents have completed the Civic Engagement Academy since its launch, with many continuing to stay involved in City initiatives and community leadership.
