Cast Away: Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo happening Saturday, June 2
Published on June 1, 2018
Dust off the kid’s fishing equipment and prepare some catfish bait, it’s time for the annual Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo.
This free fishing event is for children ages 6-12 years old and takes place at the Brahan Spring Park North Lagoon from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2.
The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo started over 30 years ago as a free community event organized by the City of Huntsville’s Parks & Recreation Department and supported by Buster’s Bait and Tackle. Together they have created a bona fide fishing rodeo with 22 tagged cash prize fish and tons of prizes and giveaways for participants.
“Kids will have fun getting the chance to fish along the banks of the North Lagoon, stocked with 500 pounds of catfish. We hope putting in the extra catfish will increase the likelihood of every kid catching fish!” stated Parks & Recreation Community Events Programmer Paul Jenson. “The rules are pretty simple. Participants have to be registered before the 8:30 a.m. start time. From there, the kids fish on their own while parents can only help put the bait on and take the fish off the hook once the fisher has reeled in the fish.”
