City Council – Highlights from the March 9 Meeting

Published on March 10, 2017

Huntsville City Council

Transportation

Council voted to approve Lyft, Inc.’s petition to operate a transportation network company in Huntsville. The decision allows Lyft to join Uber in providing the Rocket City its second TNC transit option.

New City Hall

The Huntsville City Council voted to retain Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc., to provide architectural services to determine space requirements for a new City Hall. Contract cost is $36,500. This is the first step in a multi-phase and multi-year process toward a new municipal building, one that will consolidate a number of City operations. General Services Director Jeff Easter says the current City Hall functions at just 56 percent efficiency. Whether the new building will be constructed at the present location remains to be seen; however, it is expected to remain in the downtown core, and the City is looking to the updated downtown master plan for guidance on the ideal location.

Police

Huntsville Police are building a new firing range at 325 Wall Triana Highway. Council approved a $110,045 contract with Dunn Building Company, LLC, to construct the facility and authorized an additional $35,590 for Huntsville Fence Company to keep the site secure.

Parks

Earth Day festivities at Hays Nature Preserve on April 22 will feature a chainsaw carving event thanks to an agreement approved by Council with Roark Chainsaw Carving. Council also approved a lease with Tangled Strings Studios for a music festival on April 21-22 in S.R. Butler Green.

Planning

Council set public hearings for April 27 on an ordinance to rezone 3.98 acres on the west side of Seminole Drive and south side of 8th Avenue from Residence 1-C District and Residential Office 2 District to the new Village Business C-6 District
