Published on June 27, 2025
More than 8,500 first responders, including 15 Huntsville Police Department (HPD) officers, are set to compete in the 2025 World Police & Fire Games in Birmingham.
The competition, which features public safety athletes from more than 70 countries, officially kicked off Friday, June 27, with a high-energy Opening Ceremony at Legacy Arena located within the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex.
Hosted every two years, the World Police & Fire Games bring together active and retired law enforcement, firefighters, corrections officers and other first responders for a week of intense competition across more than 60 sports. This year’s Games include 81 scheduled events happening at venues throughout the Birmingham area.
“We’re proud of our officers and the dedication they’ve shown preparing for this competition,” Police Chief Kirk Giles said. “Their ability to stay physically and mentally strong, both on duty and off, speaks volumes about the professionalism and character we value in our department. They make us proud every day, and this week is no different.”
Spectators are welcome at most events. Admission is free, but seating is general and first-come, first-served based on venue capacity. Huntsville-area residents are encouraged to come cheer on their local officers.
