The City of Huntsville will receive a $10.8 million grant from the Department of War (DOW) to help fund the first phase of Resolute Way – a critical new road connecting Interstate 565 to Gate 9 at Redstone Arsenal.
The DOW announced the grant received through the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC).
Resolute Way has long been a top transportation infrastructure priority for the City and Redstone Arsenal and will facilitate improved traffic flow at the Arsenal’s main entrance as well as along I-565 at Madison Boulevard and the Research Park Boulevard interchange. More than 100,000 vehicles pass this area daily.
The City was awarded the competitive grant through the Defense Community Infrastructure Program, which addresses improving infrastructure at military installations to enhance readiness. The improved traffic flow will also boost quality of life for residents.
Mayor Tommy Battle expressed his gratitude to DOW Secretary Pete Hegseth, OLDCC Director Patrick O’Brien, U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt and U.S. Rep. Dale Strong.
“We are grateful to be awarded this competitive grant and for the support of our Congressional delegation that elevated this project in Washington,” Mayor Battle said. “Redstone Arsenal plays an extraordinary role in keeping our nation safe and Resolute Way will become an invaluable part of the Arsenal’s support system. I also want to thank Secretary Hegseth and Director O’Brien for their thoughtful consideration in bringing this project closer to reality.”
Alabama’s Congressional delegation acknowledged Redstone Arsenal’s expanding responsibility in national defense along with the north Alabama workforce as a key element in the grant.
Sen. Tuberville: “Huntsville is growing by leaps and bounds, with nearly 18 people moving to the Rocket City every day. As U.S. Space Command moves its headquarters to Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville’s role as a national leader in defense and space is only growing stronger. We must make sure our infrastructure keeps up with that growth, which is why the Resolute Way investment at Redstone Arsenal is so important. I appreciate Secretary Hegseth’s commitment to supporting Redstone Arsenal’s mission and the more than 45,000 men and women across north Alabama who commute every day to make it possible. I’m proud to support this project and look forward to Redstone Arsenal’s continued leadership in space and defense exploration.”
Sen. Britt: “Ensuring that the workforce supporting the more than 70 federal tenants on Redstone Arsenal can access the base safely and efficiently is critically important. I’m proud to support projects like this one that strengthen operational readiness for Redstone. I’m grateful to President Trump and Secretary Hegseth for recognizing the value Redstone Arsenal provides to our national security, and I will continue working to ensure Alabama remains vital to America’s defense.”
Rep. Strong: “As north Alabama’s national security contributions continue to grow, so does our need for infrastructure to support the people and places who carry out those missions. This $10.8 million federal grant for the Resolute Way Interchange project will improve access to Redstone Arsenal and ease congestion, ensuring north Alabama is prepared to support that growth. Today’s announcement is a testament to the value of federal, state and local partners working together to ensure that our community has the resources necessary not just to grow, but to succeed. I want to thank Mayor Battle for his leadership and the OLDCC for its partnership in strengthening the communities that support our national security and military readiness.”
This grant award will help the City expedite the second phase of Resolute Way, which will reconfigure Exit 13 westbound on I-565 at Madison Boulevard, relocate Governors West at the exit to create a full access interchange that will ease congestion and improve safety in this area.
